The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had arranged a two-week stay there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

In typical New York fashion – a metropolis where opportunities abound – she declared: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for three years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I would never have had the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that job in New York resulted in a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
